SUMMARY:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:It’s Not Easy Learning That Winning (And Losing) Isn’t Everything\nConceived by Rebecca Feldman\, Additional Material by Jay Reiss\, Music and Lyrics by William Finn\, Book by Rachel Sheinkin\nNo. No. No. This is not a real spelling bee. It’s a show—a hysterical musical comedy. \nAnd Putnam County just happens to be the location of this fictional musical spelling bee–it is not meaning Putnam County\, FL! \nBut it could have been. It could have been here—or anywhere. These could be our children. It could be you or your neighbor reading out the words\, giving goofy definitions\, and offering hilarious and sometimes poignant usage examples. \nThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee takes spell-bound audiences to a fictional contest held in a Middle School where six unforgettably peculiar early teens face each other in a competition supervised by three comically idiosyncratic grown-ups. Adding to the fun are four audience members who agree to appear as spellers. On Broadway\, Al Sharpton and Julie Andrews were among them (Play Bill 1/27/2008). Flash backs show play goers the flawed parental relations which have shaped the pressure ridden spellers and reveal to audiences the real children behind their not-quite-polished public faces. \nWith a Tony Award winning book\, this is a must-see finale for the Athens Theatre’s season \nNot recommended for audiences younger than 13. \nRun time: 1 hours & 40 minutes (plus a 15-minute intermission) \nPresented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) \n\nReserve Seating\nPreferred $31 (Row A-F\, Orchestra & CC-DD Center Balcony) \nAdult $26 – Senior $24\nStudent/Child $12 – Groups of 8 or more $22\nA $3.00 per ticket Processing charge is added to all purchases. \nDue to the fact that the Historic Athens Theatre does not have an elevator to the balcony. The balcony is not accessible to anyone with a wheelchair or walker. \nAll Patrons with special needs can contact the Box Office at 386-736-1500 for our wheelchair/walker accessible seating. \n  \n\nSpecial Box Seat Package\nCatered exclusively by Joe Hearn Events\, The Elusive Grape\, and Pat & Toni’s Sweet Things. \n$360 – Price includes: \n\nUp to 10 seats in the Box Seat and Balcony area\nChoice of Red/White Wine\nCheese Platter\nChocolate Covered Strawberries\n\nPlease contact the Box Office at 386-736-1500\, for this Package.\n(a $3 processing fee will be applied for each ticket in the package) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ragtime
DESCRIPTION:Young\, Beautiful\, Passionate\, And Scandalous–America In the Time of Ragtime. \nBook by Terrence McNally\, Music by Stephen Flaherty\, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens\nBased on the novel\, Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow\n\nNominated for 13 Tony awards and winning the awards for Best Musical Score and Best Book of a Musical\, this blockbuster was adapted from E.L. Doctorow’ s great novel Ragtime (a selection in Modern Library’s list of “100 Best Novels”). \nStrikingly appropriate to our own difficult times\, Ragtime uses three disparate families to evoke the dangerously dynamic forces transforming America just before World War I. The play’s ragtime\, jazz\, gospel\, and ballad songs—30 of them in all—trace the once unimaginable sundering and merging of 3 families; one an upper-class\,  genteel\, and sheltered white family; the second\, a black family from Harlem who pursue a new kind of music and are pulled apart by fear and despair; and third\, an impoverished and nearly starving Jewish immigrant father and daughter striving to reach the American dream. The musical’s explorations of how clashing racial\, religious\, social\, and musical forces destroy some and transform others\, eventually producing a hopeful American future\, has moved and delighted a quarter century of audiences. Be sure to join them. This is a truly memorable show which cannot be missed. \nRun time: 2 hours & 45 minutes (plus a 15-minute intermission) \nPresented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) \nSPECIAL ASL/ENGLISH INTERPRETED PERFORMANCE ON FRIDAY 4/29.\nTO PURCHASE TICKETS IN THE SECTION WITH THE BEST SIGHT LINES TO THE INTERPRETERS\, PLEASE CONTACT THE BOX OFFICE EITHER AT 386-736-1500 OR EMAIL US AT BOXOFFICE@ATHENSDELAND.COM
