Prater Day Presents

Buffalo Nichols

Athens Theatre Original Singer/Songwriter Concert Series!

This is not a tribute show.  This show is part of our original singer/songwriter series. Carl “Buffalo” Nichols mesmerizes audiences with the resonant, deliberate voice of a seasoned storyteller. His words form a seamless fusion of experiences that span genres and continents. Drawing from his roots in the Midwest punk and emo scene, where he first encountered the communal spirit inherent in folk music, Nichols seamlessly weaves together threads of tradition and innovation. His style, reminiscent of traditional American folk-blues with sliding acoustic guitar notes, sparse arrangements, and straightforward rhythms, belies a rich tapestry of influences. Inspired by legendary Black musicians like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Blind Lemon Jefferson, whose songs resonated deeply with him, Nichols’s musical journey expanded as he delved into West African traditions. In Senegal, where music is not merely a career but a social identity, Nichols gained profound insights into the organic nature of music, informed by grassroots connections rather than commercial influences. His explorations continued through Eastern Europe, where he encountered modernized Carpathian folk music, sparking a realization of the enduring vitality of folk traditions. This journey culminated in Nichols’s debut album under the moniker Buffalo Nichols, a testament to his commitment to keeping the folk tradition alive while infusing it with a contemporary relevance that resonates with audiences worldwide. Nichols’s deep connection to the Delta blues and folk blues, particularly the works of Texas-born legends Lightnin’ Hopkins and Blind Lemon Jefferson, serves as a point of pride, infusing his performances with authenticity and emotional depth.
