The Athens Theatre Presents

The Contenders

This is not a tribute show!  This show is  part of our original singer/songwriter series. The Contenders, a modern troubadour band rooted in a blend of folk, rock, and country, comprise Jay Nash (with 9 albums, 10 EPs, 900 shows, and 400,000 miles under his belt) and Josh Day (drummer for Sara Bareilles, John Oates, Brandi Clark, and Jennifer Nettles).

They’ve traversed the US, supported The Milk Carton Kids numerous times, graced the stage at Americana Fest alongside Patti Griffin, and enchanted audiences at MerleFest, where Jens Kruger of the Kruger Brothers joined them onstage. Their journey extends across Europe, with performances in Holland, Germany, and France.

The duo has captivated audiences with their EP ‘Meet The Contenders’ and their debut album ‘Laughing with the Reckless’, receiving critical acclaim.

Joey Ryan of The Milk Carton Kids shares insights into their latest album, ‘Laughing with the Reckless’:

“Laughing with the Reckless, with its infectious rhythms and sublime two-part harmonies, emerges from those moments only possible when people truly ‘come together.’ Jay Nash and Josh Day convey this notion literally, as they have with countless individuals over the years. Their music stems from shared experiences, connecting with others on a deep, human level.”

“The album conveys a poignant message: the heartbreak that accompanies unwavering hope and intimate connections. The troubadour lifestyle, marked by sharing music, stories, food, and drink in strangers’ homes, shapes their songwriting. It’s a reality that gives them hope, yet, lately, breaks their hearts.”

The Contenders’ music is a testament to the power of connection, encapsulating the joys and sorrows of the human experience.
